Some rock and minerals will show different intensities or even different colors under different wavelength blacklights. I have found that anything under a 6w bulb is almost usless though. Most of the common, over-the-shelf models are long wave (UV-A). You also need a short wave (UV-C), but this is not for the weak-hearted, because a decent model can cost $200-$500. I found an 8w short wave for $280 that I am happy with. Just check out several of the on-line stores. Hope this helps....

Hi Carl, yes there is a difference between long wave and shortwave UV lights. Long wave UV lights are the relgular black lights that people used for posters in the 70's. Some rocks do glow under these. But short wave UV lights are a little harder to find, and also more expensive. I just ordered a small battery operated shortwave light on eBay for $35 + $5 shipping. Actually it comes with both longwave and shortwave bulbs. Shortwave lights will make many more types of rocks glow than longwave. I just collected a bunch of chalcedony out in Nevada that is supposed to fluoresce, but doesn't under the long wave. So I am hoping it does under the shortwave. The battery operated light may also come in handy while rock hunting.

I'm also looking for an inexpensive black light to display some rocks I got that supposively glow. How did you make out with the UPV light?

Hi. Watch the attached video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVtWOcrat4o

He recommended
uvp black light.

www.lapidary-solutions.com
UVP Mini Ultraviolet Light LW

I have not tried it yet but the price is right and it supposedly is the correct wavelength.
$26, $42 or $75
